Generation Z & Video Production
As I mentioned in the last post I have been involved in video production since the 80s when it was analog. I later became a certified Comcast TV producer with an award winning TV series on holistic health and fitness. Became friends with Dr. Oz.
What is important is learning to do a STORYBOARD of your video before you shoot the first frame.
This storyboard is divided into TWO VERTICAL sections to the page.
The first tells what you need to do with the camera and the second has the actual words that go to the video at that point.
Yes, it is time consuming but it is the reason I have less editing as I am editing the entire time I am shooting as I follow the storyboard.
The first section refers to what is happening to each camera. Is it a CLOSEUP or an EXTREME CLOSEUP? Am I panning the camera to the left or right? With a multiple camera shoot it tells which camera is needed for this section of the shoot.
When I was a TV reporter we did our story as a storyboard so the director in the booth knew what I would be saying and also which camera to use or the film we had shot for the story.
I agree that today the videos need to be like what we did at the TV station – the majority of the news stories were 30 seconds and even an in depth ones never exceeded one minute! So remember keep it SHORT and TO THE POINT as you tell the story! Also don’t use tech words if you can avoid them.
I know that Generation Z likes humor and even back in the 1960s when I was a reporter we hopefully would find some humorous story to end the news with. Today we need it more than ever!
